WASHINGTON - National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice met Monday with three American leaders of the Roman Catholic Church as the Vatican intensified its effort to avert war in Iraq.
The president plans to meet in the next day or two with Cardinal Pio Laghi, a former Vatican ambassador to the United States, who said he is carrying a message from Pope John Paul II.
