True Empowerment

True Empowerment

People have all kinds of ideas on what it takes to be a good leader.  Some focus on taking charge in tough situations.  Others emphasize an ability to be organized.  Still others stress an approach that demands excellence at all costs.

Despite all of these approaches, experts attest that successful leadership is exhibited when those in charge encourage and enable those around them.  A true leader is successful when he or she takes a step back and lets the talents of others shine through.  This approach to leadership not only makes the leader look good but also provides benefits for the entire group.  It helps everyone become the best person they can be.

Given the readings for today, it might seem odd to talk about leadership styles.  In the gospel we read about two miracles.  Jesus first begins by responding to a man whose daughter is deathly ill.  On his way there, with crowds pressing all around him, Jesus heals a woman who merely touches the hem of his garment.  Quickly realizing that power has gone out from him, Jesus stops and speaks to the woman.  Unfortunately, by the time Jesus arrives at his destination the little girl has died.  Unfazed, Jesus says that she is merely asleep.  He approaches her and tells her to get up!

All three of today’s readings point to God’s desire for all humans.  The first reading, taken from the book of Wisdom, tells us that God wants us to live wholesome, non-destructive lives.  In the reading from 2nd Corinthians, Paul explains the importance of equally sharing the abundance all are given.

In essence, the readings for today help us to understand that God wants all humans to live life to the full.  God wants us to realize our talents and the potential we all have.  Many of Jesus’ healing miracles point to this same reality.  Jesus restores people to mental, physical, and spiritual help so they can fully focus on becoming who God has designed them to be.

In light of Jesus’ Resurrection, we know that we have been designed to carry on Jesus’ example of being leaders who serve.  Jesus provides the perfect example of what leadership is by empowering others to be all they can be.  He continually focuses on turning our attention back to the thing that matters most: humanity’s relationship with God.

As peacebuilders, we too must exhibit Jesus’ servant leadership.  Our task lies in empowering and enabling others.  In seeking to ensure the needs of all people and stop injustice, we make it easier for people to focus on becoming who God has created them to be.  Along the way, we strengthen our relationship with God and therefore become who God has created us to be.
