You Made the Cut
Ever have that nervous jitter in the pit of your stomach when the list went up? Whether it was the team roster, the cast list, committee membership or honor roll, the question was the same. Did I make it? Did I make the cut?
Well, good news. When it comes to the big stuff, the most important list, when it comes to love and life, joy and faith, you've made the cut! "I call you friends, because I have told you everything," Jesus said to the disciples long ago and says today to you, to us. "It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you."
What a relief. This is even better than having a term paper cancelled or a test postponed. Better than spring break being doubled or first period not beginning til noon and still getting out at 2:30.
Why? Cuz what Jesus means is that it all isn't on your shoulders, but on his. No doubt you've a job to do: building peace, spreading reconciliation and forgiveness, even ending all kinds of oppression. (Yes, you!) "No one has greater love than this, than to lay down one's life for one's friends." (Yep! He's talking to you!) And you'll succeed if you listen for Christ's voice, follow his advice, and do as he did: "This I command you: Love one another."
You're baptized, right? Anointed with the Holy Spirit in confirmation, yes? Eat and drink of the eucharist, correct? Then it's true. You've made the cut. Welcome to Christ's posse.
