A Few Words From Emily
Emily Keebler, August 2004
My name is Emily Keebler, and I'm a junior from Wisconsin who partook in the August 2004 session of Peacebuilders Initiative. I feel truly blessed to have been a part of this wonderful experience. Throughout the year, I learned my Catholic faith in a fun environment, formed meaningful relationships with other Peacebuilders and mentors, and had my first opportunity to work with the mentally ill at my service site- a very rewarding experience! I've also grown tremendously throughout the planning and execution of my Peace Project, an effort to touch the at-risk students San Juan Diego Middle School in Racine Wisconsin.
Aside from these remarkable aspects of the program, the Peacebuilders Initiative Program has also reinforced my belief in the solidarity of humans and human dignity. The facilitators and mentors broadened the concept of peace to encompass much more than I'd previously considered "peace" to be. I learned that peace is not only the absence of war but also the presence of faith, hope, and love. Peace is reaching out to marginalized community members, advocating for their rights, and being informed of world events affecting human dignity.
I'm truly grateful for my opportunity to participate in such a quality program which has impacted my relationships, faith life, and sense of justice and peace, and I hope that many more students will have the opportunity to participate in the Peacebuilders Initiative Program in future years.
