Misericordia Home
Misericordia (meaning the "Heart of Mercy") is home to over 500 children and adults with developmental disabilities, some physically involved as well. With support, they lead lives of dignity, respect, challenge and beauty.
There are two campuses in Chicago. Misericordia South is a pediatric skilled nursing care facility serving infants and children with mental disabilities and serious medical involvement. Misericordia North is a residential facility serving children and adults with varying degrees of metal disability. Each person at both homes lives as independently as possible in an environment that is open to his or her gifts.
The philosophy of Misericordia is expressed in the words of Sister Rosemary Connelly, Executive Director:
"At Misericordia we look upon each one of our children and adults as a person with individual needs, feelings, aspirations, limitations and gifts. Each one is unique, a gift to us today, a loving and loved person made by God with a purpose in life-no matter how wrapped in mystery that purpose is. We believe, we accept, we love each person, and we are better people because they have touched our lives".
The children and adults of Misericordia participate in individually designed programs which meet their physical, mental, social, religious, educational, vocational, and recreational needs. The adult residents work daily at the various on-campus employment opportunities, including at The Greenhouse Inn Restaurant, Hearts and Flour Bakery, the Arts and Crafts Studio, and the Misericordia Gardens.
