Signs of Hope

Signs of Hope

Ours is a violent and conflict-ridden world in which a culture of retaliation and death exists alongside people of goodwill and hope. War, poverty, oppression, and injustice highlight each day's news. Statistics indicate that one in five teenagers experiences physical or sexual abuse, either personally or in their nuclear family. Violence, racial and cultural tensions, broken relationships, divorce, addiction, loneliness, alienation, and depression are all part of the fabric of daily life.

There are signs of hope. Young people today express an idealism that goes up against the prevailing culture of consumerism and individualism. High school students want to seek meaning in their lives, to deepen their spirituality, "to do good things for others."

Now more than ever, church and society need people of faith who are steeped in the traditions and practice of wisdom, peace, forgiveness, and reconciliation. Today, the American Catholic Church, facing declining numbers of priests and sisters, and challenged by the Second Vatican Council's call for the laity to participate more actively, is looking for a new generation of young Catholic leaders.

Through Peacebuilders you will be challenged to think critically, ask tough theological questions, and deepen your understanding of your faith. You will learn the skills necessary for leadership, conflict resolution, and peacemaking. And you will gain the resources and experience of mentors who can become important role models and companions. It will ground you in prayer, reflection, and faith sharing.

Situated in the culturally diverse urban setting of Chicago, the Peacebuilders Initiative offers you the amazing opportunity to challenge each other to forge a vision of your future as a Christian called and committed to serving the church and society.
