The Peacebuilders Initiative transforms lives - the lives of people in parish and high school communities all over Chicago, the lives of people served by our participants’ peace projects, and, in a most profound way, the lives of the young people who take part in the program themselves.
The heart of Peacebuilders Initiative is a weeklong summer program held at CTU. Each June, between 50 and 60 juniors and seniors in high school begin their year of commitment to peace. Accompanied by mentors, they study, pray and serve together.
Through 15 hours in theology sessions, participants gain a firm theological foundation for peace and reconciliation. Through prayer and liturgy, participants become more fully aware of God’s presence in their lives. Through four days of hands-on ministry at one of our ministry sites, participants encounter individuals dedicated to ministry and build relationships with people who are poor and marginalized in our Chicago community. Flowing from the impact of the summer week, participants design and implement their own peace project that uses their skills and passions to meet a social justice need in their community. Our mentors provide support to the participants throughout the year as they grow and integrate their learning.
