You'll need:
Matthew 28:16-20
Luke 10:1-12, 17-23
John 20:19- 23
Before you begin:
- Depending on the size of your group, decide whether you want to (a) work together as a whole group; (b) divide up into pairs; or (c) divide up into small groups of 3-5 people each.
- Decide how you'll distribute the scripture passages between the pairs or groups. Try to make sure that each least one pair or group covers each of the three passages. More than one pair or group may use the same scripture (as long as all three are covered). If you've chosen to work as one group, you may not have time to do all three.
- Arrange yourselves into pairs or groups and assign the scripture passages. Designate a spokesperson for each pair/group and a reader for each pair/group.
- If you are working out of Bibles, have everyone find the scripture passage and open their Bibles to the right place.
- Tell the group to take a few minutes of silence and ask God to open their hearts to the words of the gospel.
- Follow the steps on the worksheet "Holy Reading" for your gospel passage.
- Take a break. If you're short on time, make it a quick stand-and-stretch break.
- Come back together as a large group.
- Have the reader of one of the gospel passages read the passage aloud to the whole group. If you feel comfortable, sing an "Alleluia" that you know from church after the reader has read the gospel. This is the Catholic tradition when we read from the gospel as a community.
- Have the spokesperson give a summary of what the pair/group discussed about this passage.
- Ask if any one not in the pair/group wants to add anything.
- Repeat steps 7-9 until all the passages have been covered.
- Discuss: Now that we are about to move on from this class/group, what is Jesus calling us to continue doing? What will be some of the difficulties in doing this?
