Assign a Scripture passage that with a basic Gospel theme. For example, Luke 12:16-21, Colossians 3:5-14, Luke 6:27-31. Or invite students to choose their own.

Divide the students into small groups of three to five people each. Assign them the task of taping three different excerpts from television shows or commercials that contradict their assigned Scripture passage. Instruct them to prepare a group presentation that answers these questions:

How does each excerpt contradict the message from Scripture? Where do you see evidence that people in our world have been "blinded" by the media to this passage? What problems has that caused? Do you try to live this passage? Is it easy or difficult? Why?

Invite a brother, sister, priest, or lay person to join the group for the presentations and discussion. Ask him or her to share his or her "vocation story," how he or she came to know where God was leading. Ask him or her to focus particularly on any difficulty he or she had considering a vocation because of our cultural climate.

Have a large group discussion using the following questions. Invite representatives from a variety of vocations - single, married, ordained, religious - to join the class for the discussion.

Does our media or culture ever make religious life or priesthood look unappealing? How? How is religious life or priesthood different than what the media might portray? What are some misconceptions people have about religious life, the vows, priesthood or marriage? How would our culture define a "fulfilling life?" How would the Gospel?
