December: The Holy Family

December is a season of cold and snow in our northern climate. But it is also a season of warmth--the warmth we gain from the love of our families.

But who is our family? Is it just our living relatives? Is it our ancestors traced back several generations? Is it the people we are closest to, be they blood relations or best friends? What if our family is "dysfunctional" or nontraditional? And what about the human family?

Family, however defined, is essential to our lives as Christian believers. Christ calls us to be part of his family, and to acknowledge and honor our families on earth. His own living family, the Holy Family, is a model for us.

And at the time of year that we mark Mary and Joseph welcoming their child Jesus, becoming a family of three, let us remember the meaning of Christmas and the profound gift that little family in Bethlehem gave the world.
